I am excited to announce the launch of my AVON fundraiser to benefit the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF). When Caitlyn was a year old, she was a healthy, happy baby. She was on track developmentally, except for some slowing development in her large motor skills. Slowly, over a course of what ended up being about 2 years, she started to lose skills. She lost her few words first. Then over time, lost her interest in coloring. In the middle of trying to find out what was wrong with my princess, she began to tap her chest. This behavior progressed into mouthing and other involuntary hand patterns. The only thing that slowly was progressing was her large motor development. In the midst of losing other skills, she started walking at 18 months.
At 2 1/2 yrs we finally recieved the news. Caitlyn has a mutation on her MeCP2 gene, and was officially diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. This was devistating for us. Slowly but surely we began to turn our grief into action. We got involved in the Rett Syndrome community, and I became the Washington State Regional Representative for IRSF.
Today Caitlyn is happy, and healthier than she has been in a long time! You may or may not have known that after a long struggle to maintain her weight, Caitlyn received a g-tube to help with calorie intake! She is growin and gaining, and we couldn't be more pleased!! Thank you for making a difference in her life.
